Alive & Kickin' (at least rolling around...)

Foliage is in FULL swing! The economy may have shrunk the crowds a bit in VT, but the trees aren't listening. It's the best foliage in years! More orange-yellow than red--simply stunning.

Come join us for a hot drink, yummy sandwich and peruse all of our gorgeous gifts from around the world! By the way, we can't keep our hot sari skirts in stock! Candles, jewelry, French & Italian soaps, gourmet cheeses and of course, local maple syrup.

We're alive and kickin'--well, at least we're trying to keep moving!

Thanks for your support--
The MD crew

Summer's Here! And So Is The Ice Cream!

I'm happy to report that Moon Dog is alive and kicking--and serving tons of Wilcox ice cream! Can't do dairy? Try the ridiculously good organic Coconut Bliss frozen dessert. Or the mango or watermelon pops, too!

So come on in for a sweet treat and while you're snacking, check out our gorgeous imported Indian skirts. They're a huge hit!

Thanks for supporting the Moon Dog---it's because of you that our door is still open after a very difficult season.

Don't forget that Friday nights are Crepe Nights! 6:30-10pm. Krissy makes delicious savory and sweet crepes--including gluten-free crepes (try finding that anywhere in Vermont!) No reservations necessary. BYOB.

Save The Moon Dog! An Open Letter to the Community

Dear Moon Dog Friends,

Hi! It's Sue (or Raven). Many of you have met me at the Moon Dog, either when I was working behind the counter, plopped at the cappucino bar or ensconced on the couch. Moon Dog became my second home when I moved up to VT in 2004. It was not long after I started teaching at Springfield H.S. when I met Jacki, the owner, in the old Moon Dog space (where Pizza Stone is now). I was a newbie and pretty uncertain about starting my life here after living so many years in the City. Jacki, in her sweet and direct way, invited me into her Moon Dog world and that small act changed my life.

I can say without reservation that the friends I've met through the Moon Dog have become my family, something that was in short supply when I lived in NY. I've spent countless hours hanging out, chatting over a cup of coffee, staring at my computer and joking with all of the customers flitting in and out. You're part of my daily world.

Well, the time has come to put it all out there for my friend Jacki: Moon Dog is in desperate straits. Jacki has not been able to pay full rent since last December and has done everything in her power to keep the Moon Dog open. She's cut hours and staff. She's offered dinners and special events to invite people in. She's done all this while going through tremendous personal loss.

I can't tell you the amount of times I've seen Jacki give away a free coffee, cookie, soup, sandwich or ice cream with a toss of the hand and a "Don't worry about it" if someone didn't have enough cash. She's donated to local charities and schools. She's tried her best to keep prices fair and offer an eclectic array of gift items.

Now it's time, folks, to give back to Jacki the good karma she's given out all of these years. I know that she deeply appreciates all of the support the community has given and is too shy to write this letter herself (though she's given me permission). It's hard for her to ask for help but I've seen her in tears one too many times. So, I'm doing it for her. Consider me Cassandra: calling out the warning before it's too late.

Moon Dog is on the brink, my community. Please--if you want to see this wonderful store continue to be on the Green, please help. Come shop. Have a meal. Buy an extra ice cream. We know that times are tough for everyone and thank you for any support you can give.

I've also created a PayPal "Donate" button. Please consider donating to the Moon Dog, even if it's $1. All of the money will go towards rent or Moon Dog expenses, minus PayPal fees. All donations are tracked by PayPal and Jacki will have a copy. PayPal is a safe, easy and secure way to send money. No credit card information will be transmitted to us.

KEEP MOON DOG CAFE OPEN!

We're on our last straw here, friends. Moon Dog will close within a few months without your help. Please help the Moon Dog stay in business!

With love and thanks,
Sue, Jacki and the entire Moon Dog Crew

Why Buy Local? Keep The Moon Dog Open!

A personal story from Jacki, owner of the Moon Dog Café:

"I thought about putting a sign in my window asking that everyone who knows me or the Moon Dog to please come in once a week just to buy something small: a dozen eggs, a gallon of milk. I know that we don’t have the variety of the big health food stores/local co-ops and are not able to offer case sales. Yet if everyone in Chester would purchase one little thing a week, it would make the difference between me staying in business or closing the Moon Dog.

I know times are tough for everyone and that’s the time that we have to stick together. All I’m asking is that everyone come in and spend $10 a week. It makes a big difference! Thanks for your support of the Moon Dog."

Peace and love,
Jacki

Another Satisfied Moonie

One of our beloved regulars came in for lunch yesterday. She hadn't tried the fruit and cheese platter--but was suddenly overcome with a desire for it.

Good choice.

Here's the email I received less than 2 hours later:

...ok...food coma...coming on...I can feel it...there is nothing that even closely resembled moderation or mindfulness in the eating of that lunch. Dainty nibble of cheese? Leave some for dinner? Able to move right now? Able to move anything through my system later?

I think not.

yum

Enough said.

Jacki, Revealed

Jacki and a group of lovely Chester women have joined together to promote our lovely town. How they do it? By shedding their clothes, of course! Pam Nelligan has created a tastefully shot calender of 12 Chester business women in various forms of undress. If you've seen the movie Calender Girls with Helen Mirren, you'll know what I mean! 12 gorgeous women and one wonderful cause.

All proceeds benefit the town of Chester. To see and purchase the 2008 calender, just click here. (Jacki's on the left.)

Time For A Little Resurrection!

Yes, we still happily exist at the Moon Dog. That's the way life is in VT: suddenly, it's a year later and we haven't updated the blog. Well, what's a year, right?

Anyway, here's some Moonie news:

We were visited by these cool folks at Yert.com, who are trying to raise awareness about global warming by taking a year-long road trip across America. Check them out!

Jacki introduced a whole new line of beautiful, natural baby products from California Baby. Your babe will absolutely love them!

We have locally grown cukes, corn and other wonderful produce now that the season is in full-swing. Ahh...nothing like VT produce. Yum!

We're in expansion-mode! Moon Dog will be expanding further into the building and will be offering more in the way of health & beauty, funky local art, stones & crystals and plants! Look for our bigger store by Fall '08!

We're open from 10-7 Mon-Sat and 10-5 on Sundays, so stop on by!

Another Great Review For The Moon Dog!

We ventured into the small town of Chester (only a couple minutes away) and started by getting a bite to eat at the Moon Dog Cafe. The owners are very friendly and had just moved into a larger location. They have a great menu of organic foods and it served as a perfect mid afternoon meal.

Play That Funky Music

Many people ask, "What's that great music playing on your stereo?" It's Putamayo World Music!

We LOVE the Putamayo CDs, especially the Latin, South Pacific and Mali ones. We regularly play World Groove and French Cafe, as well.

Check out the website and soon you can have your car or house sounding just like the Moon Dog!
